Simple but Significant

In a world where anyone can pick up a camera, edit a movie on their phone, and upload it to their following on social media, how do you make something stick? Films that are simple but significant are often some of my favorite stories. Films that have minimal camera tricks, no elaborate filming locations, and simple animations have nothing to hide. The story is what carries it. Those are the stories that continue to play in my mind even after pressing pause. Those are the stories I love to watch. Those are the stories I love to tell.

PBS LearningMedia: Ivan Doig

Ivan Doig mined his hardscrabble Montana childhood to write an award-winning memoir, critically acclaimed novels, and national best-sellers. His captivating and at times heart-breaking narratives embody the harshness and beauty of the western landscape, draw upon his experience as a journalist and historian, and celebrate the grit required for his beloved characters to survive in challenging social and physical climates.  Doig’s tender and poetic portrayals of hardworking people and the worlds they inhabit have made him one of the most influential and celebrated authors of the American West.

Hubble: Not Yet Imagined

Hubble's launch and deployment in April 1990 marked the most significant advance in astronomy since Galileo's telescope. Thanks to five servicing missions and more than 30 years of operation, our view of the universe and our place within it has never been the same.

Statistically Caught

For American fisheries, national standards come from the marine statisticians at NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). In this film, audiences will be walked through the minds behind protecting our oceans one data point at a time. And how by looking back at the past fishery mismanagement, fish populations, and climate data, statisticians are able to predict the future of sustainable catch.

Hubble Space Telescope Servicing Missions 1-4

Shortly after the Hubble Space Telescope was deployed in 1990, the observatory's primary mirror was discovered to have an aberration that affected the clarity of the telescope's early images. Fortunately, Hubble, orbiting 353 miles (569 km) above the surface of the Earth, was the first telescope designed to be visited in space by astronauts to perform repairs, replace parts, and update its technology with new instruments. Servicing Mission 1, launched in December 1993, was the first opportunity to conduct planned maintenance on the telescope. In addition, new instruments were installed and the optics of the flaw in Hubble's primary mirror was corrected.

Years Gone By

Once thriving cities, Greenbackville and Franklin City, VA were the location to harvest world-class Chincoteague Salt Oysters. However, due to over-harvesting of the oysters, improper land management, increasingly severe storms, and an encroaching tidal line, many who called these cities home left to pursue more stable lives elsewhere. Now they have less than 500 residents, most seasonal visitors. This sleepy little beach town located on the Eastern Shore of the United States is more than just a picture of years gone by, but rather a warning of what the backyards of many may look like in the future.
